Erectile dysfunction is a common ailment, as more than 18 million men in the U.S. over 20 years of age are affected by ED. There is a stigma surrounding ED, where many men are embarrassed to talk about their problems and only 33% seek medical help. There are many erectile dysfunction remedies, but recently, a new study has shown the benefits of long-acting testosterone in boosting the sex lives of diabetic men.
ED is defined as the inability to get or keep an erection long enough to sustain sexual intercourse. There are many symptoms of ED, including difficulties getting and trouble keeping an erection and reduced sexual desire.
As ED develops about 10 to 15 years earlier in diabetic men than in nondiabetic men, diabetes is one of the most significant causes of ED in men. It is the most reported sexual problem in men with diabetes, along with hypogonadism which is a condition where the body does not produce enough testosterone.
This placebo-controlled study showed that long-acting testosterone undecanoate, which is an ester of the reproductive hormone, improved not only erectile function, but intercourse sanctification and sex drives in men with type two diabetes. The study suggests using testosterone for a minimum of six months to get the most benefits.
There are two types of diabetes, type one and type two. Type one diabetes is when a person’s immune system destroys the cells that produce insulin, which eventually eliminates insulin production from the body as a whole. Type two diabetes is more common, occurring when the body isn’t able to use insulin the correct way as a result of insulin resistance or insulin deficiency. This study is helpful only in men with type two diabetes, as their bodies will produce some testosterone while undecanoates will help provide a long-lasting hormonal balance.
If you do not have diabetes, there still are other treatments for ED. There are oral medicines, testosterone replacement, penis pumps, penile implants, and blood vessel surgeries. Doctors will also recommend you quit smoking, lose weight, get treatment for any alcohol or drug problems, and reduce as much stress as possible.
