Patient C was a 51-year-old type I diabetic. He cannot remember when his problems began but he hasn’t been able to function sexually in “many years”. This fellow has educated himself considerably on the options and was eager to try anything that might work. He was evaluated and given a test dose of medication and achieved a workable erection. When I walked into the exam room after the test dose, he was smiling from ear to ear!
Patient C is a very happy man. He has regained part of his life that he thought was lost. Diabetes, both type I and type II are a significant cause of ED. The longer you have diabetes and the poorer the control of the diabetes, the worse the ED. Most diabetics have a low testosterone level. More on testosterone therapy in a subsequent blog.
