Premature Ejaculation

What is Premature Ejaculation (PE)?

Premature ejaculation is simply defined as ejaculation before you want it.  Medically defined as ejaculation within the first two minutes of intercourse or an uncontrolled ejaculation. Most people divide this medical issue into two groups:

  1. Early Onset or lifelong PE, in which the patient has struggled with PE since puberty.
  2. Late Onset or acquired PE, in which the patient developed PE at some later point in life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes premature ejaculation?

Lifelong PE usually results from psychological conditions.  Childhood trauma, rushing through sexual experiences to not get caught, or your cultural attitudes towards sex can all lead to PE.

Acquired PE has other causes, which are usually medical and/or relationally triggered.  Stress, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, prostate disease, heavy drinking, and multiple sclerosis have all been found to increase the likelihood of premature ejaculation.

Are there any treatment options for PE?

Yes.  While PE’s origins are typically psychological and counseling is frequently helpful, there are medical solutions to PE.  Using intracavernosal injections is a functional solution to PE. Many people can use ICI regularly for several months and the PE will be resolved.
